Plant and admire: 12 unpretentious garden flowers part 2
Hosta
How much does it cost: $3 on average.
Bloom time: second half of summer.
Planting time: from May, when the first sprouts appear, to the end of summer.
Hosta blooms with unsightly bells. The most valuable are the leaves of various colors, shapes and sizes
If I had more space on my plot, I would create separate beds of hostas, but for now I populate the corners under the fruit trees with them
Conditions. The plant prefers shady places with moist, slightly acidic soil. In the sun, the leaves become shallow and the pattern becomes less contrasting. Hosta lush in the darkest parts of the garden, surviving any weeds.
How to care. Water, mulch with a layer of straw or sawdust. Advise to feed with nitrogen fertilizers in the spring, but I do not do this: I am afraid that mine will grow even more. Although hosta can grow in one place for 10 years, it still has to be replanted every 3-5 years, otherwise it will crush its neighbors.
Echinacea purpurea
Cost: Seeds from $0.13, only blooms the next year after sowing, adult bush - from $2.3.
Bloom time: July through September.
Time of planting: advised in spring, but survives and at a later transplanting before flowering, the main thing - not in the heat.
Bright and tall Echinacea can be a dominant feature in an autumn flower bed. In addition to purple Echinacea, white varieties are also found, but much less frequently
Conditions. The plant prefers sunny areas and is not demanding of soil fertility: it will bloom even on poor soil.
How to care. Water in dry weather and weed. If you feed it two or three times a season with organic fertilizer, the bush will be more lush.
Succulents
How much it costs: on Amazon from $1, in the store from $2.3.
Flowering time: July-August.
Planting time: Any time, they'll take root.
Succulents have a huge number of varieties - it's easy to forget and start collecting.
Conditions. Succulents are plants that can store a reserve of water in their tissues. They usually grow in hot climates, so succulents prefer sun and light soil, preferably with sand. Will take root in the shade, but will be more loose.
How to care for. Plants do not require any care, except that you can remove flowers and remove excess plants. Watering is only necessary in abnormally hot weather when it has not rained for several weeks.
Thyme
**Cost:**Seeds from $0.15, adult plants from $2.3.
Bloom time: June through September. Don't be afraid to cut off the inflorescences: thyme regrows quickly.
Planting Time: Seeds are sown in March, and seedlings are sent into the ground from May through September. It can be transplanted flowering, it will tolerate everything.
Conditions. They say a sunny spot is best, but in my garden it grows just as lush in the shade under an apple tree as it does in the open. It grows better on neutral soils. If the soil is acidic, add ash, slaked lime or dolomite flour before planting.
Geicheras
How much does it cost: From $2.2
Bloom time: June through August.
Planting time: May or August.
Some varieties of geicheras bloom with crimson bells for up to a month, and their brightly colored leaves are attractive in any season
Conditions. Geicheras grow well in poor and well-drained neutral soils. It does not tolerate stagnant moisture and acidic soil, so before planting it is worth introducing ash and making drainage of stones and sand. Hybrids with light-colored leaves feel better in full sun, while those with red leaves tolerate semi-shade.
- *Water in dry weather and mulch the ground around the bush. Fertilizers are not necessary: Geicheras can even get sick from excessive organic matter.
When the clumps have grown very large and the center is hollow, it is time to divide them into several bushes.
Phlox
Cost: from $0.5.
Bloom time: May - August depending on the species.
Planting time: July - September after flowering.
The phloxes are so bright that they draw all the attention to themselves. Even the purple Echinacea is lost against their background - it is in the lower right corner.
Conditions. Open sunny areas with light, well-permeable soil rich in humus are required.
Rudbeckia
Cost: from $1.3.
Bloom time: July through September.
Planting time: spring.
Rudbeckia is easily propagated by seeds, and if you do not cut off the flowering buds in time and do not remove self-seeding, in a few years you may get such thickets.
Conditions. Rudbeckia looks especially bright in sunny areas. The soil is undemanding, it will take root on clay soil.
Water in dry weather. This sun flower will enliven any garden and seems to survive without any care at all.
